I was chosen by our art teacher to be the art reporter of our school along with one other student, Zakkiyya. Zakkiyya and I were honored to take the responsibility. Here is our report so far:
The Art of Masks
BY:DANE AND ZAKKIYYA
Over the past couple of weeks the fifth grade of J.H.House has been learning the technique of mask making. This unique art has been around for centuries. Back then, the masks were used for cerimonies and other rituals.
Today, they are for fun and shows. Here are the steps the fifth graders took to make our artwork.
Mask making can be challenging, but it can also be fun! Here are the steps to make the cultural masks.
Grab your materials, aluminum foil, craft sticks, newspaper print, permanent markers, pencil, and tape.
On the news print draw the craziest masks you can possibly drem up. Note* Make sure the face covers up most of your paper.
Take the foil and bear down on the foil, enough to make your face show up on the foil.
Now do designs on the opposite side of the face. BE CREATIVE!!
5. Turn over your mask, color, and add your final touches.
The U.S uses more oil than any nation. In fact the U.S uses about 15 million more barrels of oil a day than other countries like Japan and China. 13.2 million barrels everyday go to transportation. The rest goes to other uses such as homes factories and businesses. Here are the percentages from where the U.S gets the oil:
40 .8% domestic sources 45 .1% Other
19 .1% middle east
A way to prevent this is to encourage car pooling and take other sources of transportation such as buses and subways.
I have been researching a topic over the last couple of weeks on obesity. Here is my pre-writing.
Do you know anyone who is very overweight? Most do not pay attention to the seriousness of this "disease."People who are overweight are also refered to as being obese. Obesity occurs when people have too much adipose tissue. It is caused by a lack of exercise and bad eating habits. Obesity is more prevalent among children with obese parents.
I want to research this topic to learn all I can about this disease so I can teach other people. This is not easy for people to overcome because they will have to watch their eating habits for the rest of their life.
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge recently offered basic advise to Americans to ready them for possible terroist attacks. It is important to have a communication plan so that families can keep in touch during an emergency. Everyone should put together a "kit" that includes the following:
duct tape to secure windows and doors
3 day supply of water
radio and supply of batteries
In case of a disaster, citizens should keep on a radio for government instructions.
A decade ago just 18% of all Americans over the age of 65 carried an outstanding balance on their credit cards. Today, almost half the elderly carry unpaid balances monthly. The question most people ask is what causes them to be in debt? Necessities such as groceries and presciption drugs are the main causes.Because of our slumping economy, investments aren't making enough to cover the rising costs of health care.
Do you want to go on a luxurious cruise, but not come down with a bug such as the Norwalk virus? The most efficient way to do so is to take the newer ships. U.S.A. Today has analyzed 5 years worth of data on the sanitary conditions of vessels. They have found that newer ships are cleaner, and as a result passengers are less prone to illnesses. (Remember, latest designs are cleaner, but passengers who come aboard sick can still cause outbreaks.)
