Finding something in Camp Green Lake - MIW

On page 27, Stanley is talking to Mr. Pendanski, and Mr. Pendanski tells him, "If you find anything intersting or unusual, you should report it to either me or Mr. Sir when we come around with the water truck. If the warden likes what you have found, you'll get the rest of the day off." This really interested me because: 1) It's unusual to punish people by making them consistently dig holes, 2) What in the world would be so interesting to find in a deserted area where a lake used to be?, and 3) Getting the day off if you find something in the dirt seems a bit strange to me. This made me wonder if this camp for bad boys is set up because the warden is looking for something in that desert and it is just easier to have someone else look for it in the hot sun.

The Curse - TMT

Louis Sachar begins the book discussing the curse that was placed on Stanley's great-great-grandfather.  In following chapters he has provided various examples of the family's bad luck.  However, I believe that Stanley's purpose is to reveal that there is not a curse at all.

Description - MIW

Just by reading the very first chapter in Holes, I can already tell it is going to be full of a lot of description. Camp Green Lake seems like such a horrible, icky place and you can tell just by reading the first page and a half. I have read some of Louis Sachar's other books, and they have always been very creative. I am interested to find out exactly what Camp Green Lake is if it is not a lake. I also believe the warden (mentioned on the first page) wil play a significant role in this story.

Predicting...

I predict the moral of this book will be to question everything.  Do not do what someone tells you to do without considering the consequences of your actions.  These boys have been instructed to dig these holes, but they must consider the motives behind the project.  I can't wait to start reading because Louis Sachar is such a creative writer!  The Wayside School stories were my favorites when I was younger...
