Predicting - CH 16 - AH

What do you think might have happened to the Jewish people who were hiding in the boat if the German soldiers had found them? (p126)

Give me your thoughts. -JC

Do you think that Ellen and Annemarie will re-unite someday?

What do you think the Rosens will do when they get to Sweden?  (This is assuming that they get there safely.)

Why do you think that the packet is so important?  What do you think it is?

At the end of chapter 12, what do you think happened to Annemarie's mother?

The title, Number the Stars-Chapt. 10 pg. 87- TC

When reading page 87 I quickly noticed that this passage gives insight into the title, Number the Stars.

"It is he who heals the broken in spirit                                                          and binds up their wounds,                                                                         he who numbers the stars one by one..."

"The night breeze moved the dark curtains at the open windows. Outside, she knew, the sky was speckled with stars. How could anyone number the stars one by one, as the psalm said? There were too many. The sky was too big."

It is evident that "he who numbers the stars one by one" is the Lord. What is the significance of Annemarie doubting the abilities of the Lord? Do you feel that Annemarie truly understands the religious connections of the Nazi occupation and Judaism?

Is this a job? JC

I was just wondering if the Uncle, or anyone else who took on that dangerous mission of transporting Jews into Sweden, got paid for the job?  I'm sure just saving lives is well worth it, but I'm just curious if this type of arrangement made a lot of people money?

Can anyone help me with this question?

Non-Jews protecting Jews! TMP

Are you at all surprised that the Johansens, who are non-Jews, agreed to take in Ellen, a Jewish girl? Why would they risk it?

King Christian X -JC

I wonder why our history classes in previous schools failed ,at least mine, to mention King Christian X in our WW2 lectures?  That's the first time I'd ever heard of him and it sounds as if he was of some importance to Denmark during the "Nazi occupation".  I admired the fact that he blew up his own weaponry and ships just so the Nazi army could not have access to it.  I was just shocked that I don't recall him being mentioned in any of my past classes.

Discussion - Chapter 1 - AH

Do you think the German soldier knew that Ellen was Jewish when he stopped Annemarie and Ellen from running on the sidewalk?  Was the German soldier being cynical in his questioning of the girls or do you think that maybe he was truly trying to be nice to the girls, but the girls had been taught that the German soldier meant harm and they should stay away from them?
