Technology makes it fun- NC-Activity

For easy reading, a great way to organize information could be to use the program known as Inspiration!!!
The teacher can either have the students use this program to help outline each chapter, or at least one. This is a great way for the students to organize their work so they can remember what went on in a certain part of the story they have completed. (In inspiration, students are also able to add graphics if necessary.

letter of recommendation, TMP

A technology activity could be created using the Microsoft Word software program to have each student write a letter of recommendation to Israeli authorities explaining why Uncle Henrik deserves a medal for bravery. The letter could describe his boat and what he really used it for.

This lesson could teach a class how to write a formal letter with all the necessary parts.

 

Students in Other Countries-Chapt. 1-4 TC

Throughout this book students are reading how challenging life is for these girls. The contrast between their childhood (Ellen and Annemarie) and the childhood of our students in the United States is amazing. Due to our country being at war, I feel it is extremely important for the students we teach in America to become aware of the hardship children in other countries must go through. Many children are stipped of their youth and innocence due to the turmoil taking place in their country. An informative assignment for students would be to research the lives of children in various countries.

http://www.rethinkingschools.org/war/ideas/ is a great website for teachers who want to cover and teach about the war using poetry and creative writing.

www.school.discovery.com/lessonplans/programs/tlc-twochildren/ gives an activity intended to provide students with an opportunity to examine basic facts about two foreign countries and compare those countries with the United States.

For research, I would allow time at the computer lab. This could become a huge social studies unit where the children do all of the investigating and then report their findings to the class. By giving this assignment students are teaching themselves and learning about the lives of their peers thousands of miles away.

 

Predictions- JC

All of the information that has been given throughout chapters 1-4 has been enough for the readers to start making valid, concrete predictions.  In the classroom, the students could use what they've read to make a web using Inspiration.  The middle circle could be labeled "Predictions" and then the students could branch out of that title to list the predictions that they believe will happen throughout the rest of the book.

At the end of the book, the students could use these webs for their class discussion.  In the discussion, the class will talk about which predictions actually happened, and the occurances that kept the other ones from not happening. 

Of course, the program that will be needed to do this lesson is Inspiration on Office xp.
