Something to think about (19-21)

Knowledge: What ceremony did Jonas's father perform on the unwanted twin?

Comprehension: Compare Jonas's point of view, of the community, prior to receiving the memories with his point of view after receiving the memories.

Application: Identify three rules Jonas disobeyed during his escape from the community.

Analysis: When The Giver says he wants to be with his daughter Rosemary, what does he mean? (Inference)

Synthesis: Jonas has successfully escaped from the community. Make a prediction about what might happen next.

That Ending! -ABM

Okay...WHAT did you think of that ending?? I was very upset that the author just leaves us hanging! Do Jonas and Gabe make it or do they die? I like to think that since they seemed to be so close to another community, someone found them and helped nurse them back to help. I really want Jonas and Gabe to be able to experience all of the wonderful things he has been recieving such as Christmas, birthday parties, and music.

Questioning

1) What assignment in the community is given to Jonas?

2) How would you summarize the ceremony of 12?

3)What examples can you find where Jonas demonstrated intelligence, integrity, and courage?

4) How is the Reciever related to the Giver?

5) How would you improve the way Jonas's community is set up?

6) What is your opinion of the passing out of assignments?

Release - AM

I was wondering what everyone thought about "release" in the community. Obviously, this is a term that is used when someone dies, although everyone views release at an old age as a wonderful thing that is celebrated and looked foreward to. Also, they use release for punishment and to (in a sense) "weed out" the weak and those deemed to be unproductive. How do you think that this practice came to be acceptable, as we now would view this punishment as completely unacceptable?

Ceremony of Twelve - Ch 7 - AK

Knowledge: What ceremony is Jonas attending for himself and his fellow groupmates?

Comprehension: Compare and contrast the importance of age in The Giver until age 12 when it is no longer considered important to the importance of age in our society during one's entire life. Is age even important in our society?

Application: What is the result of the Ceremony of Twelve that makes it so important?

Analysis: Why do you think the Chief Elder skipped Jonas during the Ceremony of Twelve?

Synthesis: Can you describe another way the Chief Elder could have handled Jonas' assignment that wouldn't have caused as much commotion and that wouldn't have taken away from the rest of the groups assignments?

Evaluation: Why was it better, at this point in the story, that she skip over him?
