A poll on CNN showed that parents and teachers disagree on a large range of topics concerning education. Here are a few of the results of the survey:
- 73% of teachers say they know more than their students about learning tools available on the Internet. 57% of parents say they know more than parents.
- 71% of teachers say class work and homework is the best way to measure academic success. 63% of parents say the same. A minority of both groups favored test scores.
- 79% of teachers say high schools do a good job, if not better, in preparing students for college. 67% of parents agree.
- 43% of parents say low expectations of students is a serious problem. 54% of teachers say the same.
There is more of interest to read in the entire article. Pick a number and write your opinion about the statement. Then let us hear your voice. Guess the percentage and how you think the poll would have went if students of these parents and teachers had participated in the poll.
Of course, we would love to hear other voices, too! What's your opinion?

I didn't know teachers knew more than students about surfing the Internet. This is really surprising to me. But when you think of learning tools...that's different.
What learning tools do your teachers know about?

As a teacher devoted ot tech integration, wokring at the district level, I can say indeed this would have had strikingly different results. From my decade in education and technology I can say (uncategorically) teacher and parents DO NOT know more than students. Parents may corner the market on internet concerns, teachers are relatively oblivious but I think none of the 3 groups understadns internet safety. While watching Studio 60 a HS student Iknow heard my family name mentioned but did not understad the reference, befroe the show moved further along he had discovered hthe intent of hte reference and gained deeper meaning form a seemingly innocuous moment in a TV show. Woudl a teacher or parent reach for their wireless laptop or PDA or Blackberry to answer the glimmer of curiousity - Oh certainly not! These kiddos have grown up with mountains of informtaion LITERALLY at their fingertips, while parents don't search for answers and techers still dread the research library where they are wholly dependent upon theresearch librarian - who is by now no doubt - VERy keen on internet research and data evaluation.
