A Witch Hunt

As I read this novel, I connected it more and more with what I knew about the Salem Witch Trials. I have always wondered how an entire community could become so confused that they would punish innocent people.  I decided to find out exactly what happened in Salem. Researching this topic could help older students relate the book to real history. Using Yahooligans, I discovered a short list of links that provide a varied and informative view of the witch hunt and trials. They are all appropriate for older students as they explain the events in an easy-to-read manner. What a Site! -CN

An author study would be great for any Newbery Award winning author, so I went to my google search engine and typed in Elizabeth George Speare. A site worth mentioning to everyone looking for information to relate to your curriculum and this book was found. http://www.indiana.edu/~eric_rec/ieo/bibs/speare.html

Mei-Yu Lu a literacy specialist compiled several websites for people to check out. She used a variety of sources so take a look.

Pilgrim Clothing- chp22- mbr

I found this website after Kit complained (one more time) about the horrible drab clothing that Colonial Americans wore. I was curious to see just how uncomfortable and ugly the designs were. Boy, she was right! Go to this website if you are interested in learning more for yourself.

Virtual Field Trips - SM

As your tour guide, I have located several virtual field trips you can share with your students.  These are:

http://www.salemwitchmuseum.com/links.html

http://oldsaybrook.com/

I chose these websites because they are great tools to allow students to interact with colonial history.  The pictures are wonderful!

As a side note,  these links were found at,  http://pirates.k12.ar.us/cre/labert/witch.htm  This is another great resource for teachers to have while reading this book.

Check out these sites and tell me what you think.

Facts about Barbados

I have heard of the country Barbados before but I don't really know much about it. I looked up this interesting website on general facts about where Kit is from. Feel free to check it out.

Back in the day, Barbados used a great deal of slaves to help run their sugarcane farms. I would like to bring in some sugarcane to share with the class.
