Guion Bluford Jr. has one sky-high career. On August 30,1983, aboard the Challenger, he became the first black African American to travel into space. He was born in 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1960s and '70s he flew f-4 fighter jets in the Vietnam War. Bluford became an astronaut for NASA in 1979. Bluford was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1997 . He now works for the Aerospace Corporation.
