Hi Derrick,
I agree that playing video games too much takes away from homework time; however, I also believe that watching too much television has the same affect. At least during the playing of the video game, the child is actively engaged and has to think about certain strategies. While watching television, all you have to do is sit there. Also, the same things can be said about any activity a child is engaged in that promotes isolation - listening to music, reading a book all are things you do by yourself. Time spent reading books and listening to music is also time taken away from playing with friends or spending time outside. So does this mean reading and listening to music can harm your child? Of course not!
Also, as far as the question about video games causing aggression in children, the research is not at all clear on the subject. I don't think that a child who is loved and supported child who happens to play a violent videogame isgoing to suddenly turn into a killer. On the other hand, a child with a bad temper and violent disposition shouldn't be doing anything (games or otherwise) that encourages such behavior. The key word is moderation.
Keep writing.
Julie
