Toy Trouble

Everyone thinks the worst may be over once you survive the holiday shopping rush. I think it's when you go home and on the box it says "Assembly Required." The K'Nex Rippin' Rockin' Roller Coaster is one of the year's hottest toys. I think it's really cool, but the reporters of 20/20 don't. One of them got a Rippin' Rockin' Roller Coaster for their child and when they opened the box... WHOOSH!!! Over a thousand pieces fall out of it. After 40 minutes, the parents give up after completing 2 pages of the 80 page manual. Also, there was the "T-Wrecks" Hot Wheels toy that took an engineer one hour to put together. Don't you think that is a little extreme?

Teflon Flu?

You've probably heard of Teflon, the non-stick chemical they put on cooking items, and on carpets to help prevent stains. Well, it can be deadly. Studies led to the conclusion that Teflon is a risk to you, and your pet bird. You see, when Teflon gets heated to a certain extent, it gives off gases, and if your pet bird breathes it in, the results usually lead to death for your beloved pet. This will sometimes give you flu like symptoms, but if you are pregnant, your baby can have life threatening diseases.

In 1981, a woman named Sue Bailey, who worked in a Teflon factory mixing chemicals to make Teflon, had a baby boy and named him Bucky. The baby had only one nostril and a deformed right eye. The doctors told her not to get attached to him because he probably wouldn't make it through the night, but thankfully he lived. Now, reporters have found reports saying that all of Sues fellow workers who have had children have had babies either with a deformed eye or one nostril.

"I've never, ever felt normal. You can't feel normal when you walk outside and every single person looks at you. And it's not that look of 'he's famous' or 'he's rich,' " Bucky said. "It's that look of 'he's different.' You can see it in their eyes."

What do you think America can do to help prevent others from having kids like Bucky?

Stop! In the Name of Busyness!

Five minutes before the bus comes, you can't find your left shoe, your agenda, and you haven't eaten breakfast yet. Now that's rushed! Have you ever felt like that? I sure have. These days just make you want to scream! I even have wished they would just go away. In the next few paragraphs, I will tell you how to reduce your stress level!

After a hard day at school, you just want to go home and relax. At home, you realize that you have soccer pratice in an hour, and you have an hour's worth of homework to do. OH NO!!! You feel very rushed and your whole week is like this because of meetings, sports and clubs.

Some things you could do to help:

á Limit your plans to one or two events a week.

á Try to do as much homework as you can in class

á Try to not forget homework. Going back and getting them takes up time.

Merissa had an easy day. She had breezed through her classwork and had joined a school group. After choir, Merissa quickly packed her bookbag and left.

Once at home, she watched a bit of T.V., thinking she had little homework. When it became 6:30, she started her homework. When she looked in her agenda, her teacher had written for her to do a spelling page. She had forgotten to take her spelling book home!

Oh no! She called her friend to get the spelling book. By the time she got the book and started it was 8:00 and she was late for bed and sleepy in the morning.

Things you can do for help:

  1. Check your agenda before you leave school.
  2. Try to do homework earlier so if you dont have something, you can go get it.

If you follow these rules every day, you can start to become stress free!

I'm From

Today, Mrs. Davis' group joined together and we were asked to hand in our homework. Our homework was to write a poem with starting each line with I'm From like I'm from snowy weather to mountain tops, or I'm from waking up to fresh cinnamon rolls on a sunny Sunday morning. Intresting, eh? Well, here's my first rough draft!

I'm From

I'm from fresh baked goods with my mom's special touch

I'm from diving in machinery, calling my dad to lunch

I'm from novels of all kinds, fantasy my favorite

I'm from refreshingly cool water down my back from my aunt's pool

I'm from waking up to a warm fresh cinnamon rolls on a sunny Sunday morning

I'm from Sarah, my unique one-of-a-kind sister

I'm from my dad, showing off his new RC boats

I'm from my mom, my loving mom who tucks my covers in tight

I'm from my family, the treasure who I will cherish forever!

The original poem, that inspired our class to write this is written by George Ella Lyons. So, how do you like it?  Tell me what I should improve, or anything else that I should do. Thanks!

Thinking About Possibilities

Mrs. Davis read to us a post that she wrote on her weblog, it was long but inspirational. She wrote about how when she reads a post, she loves to recearch that topic to find more info about the topic. Mrs.Davis hopes to find even more edublogs written by kids. In the post, she wrote somthing that Mr. Richardson said about blogging:

  • Find and read material that is relavent to your life.
  • Capture the essence of this relevant reading, give credit to its source, and synthesize those ideas into a piece of writing that advances a personal, perhaps greater understanding of that topic.
  • Publish that writing for resoponse and for perhaps pushing someone elses thinking on the subject.
  • Read some more about the subject.

I think that what Mr. Richardson wrote was fantastic!

Note from Emily's teacher:

Emily is a member of a group of fifth graders (ESL and native-English speaking) who are using weblogs to become better writers. The class weblog is Thinking & Writing Wrinkles.

The server for the blog where this site was originally hosted has become unstable. This blog has been transfered from manila software to typepad software so some transfers may not look as well as the original site did but the content written by Emily remains the same.
