Celebrating Dr. Seuss

Hh_13 Dr. Seuss' Birthday is a special day at JH House Elementary School.  Teachers and students spent time reading his masterful books and sporting his hat!  Why, we even had "Green Eggs and Ham"!  Hh_14

Family Night

School_pics_045 Family Night was a huge success at JHH.  We had lots of good food, good singing, good dancing, and fun games as we enjoyed the company of our friends and family.  School_pics_037 I have to admit, Mrs. Goode, Mrs. McCullers, Mrs. Babin, Ms. Rikard, and Ms. Lincoln were one of my favorite acts of the night! Bizpal Get Together

Hh_10 Once again, the nice employees of General Mills came through for us!  Our bizpal mentors came to JHH with lots of food and Valentines for our bizpal students.  There were lots of great conversations in the media center as the two pals met with each other once again.  If you are a bizpal, what do you like most about the program and why?  If you are not a bizpal, would you like to be one next year?

Visiting the High Museum

Hh_9 Our fifth-grade students recently enjoyed seeing the artwork of Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden at the High Museum of Art.

Estefany, Mayra, and Marissa report on the following event:

On February 8, 2005 the fifth grade of J. H. House Elementary School went on a fabulous field trip to The High Museum of Art. On our way to the museum we saw the Capital of Atlanta. Even though the trip was long, we finally arrived. As we entered the building we saw a beautiful statue. We than entered the Museum. The line was so long, but we were all too very excited that we didn’t even notice. Many students noticed the shapes in the collages. Libby Bradford told us that the music in the audio tour was very “jazzy”. Some of the art had trains as symbols of the migration of African Americans to the north. The biggest piece of art we saw was called “Berkeley--The City and it’s People”. The artwork was so beautiful that we wanted to touch it and scream with joy But, we couldn’t. As we left the exhibition and made our way to lunch we went down a really tiring ramp/ walk-way. Finally, we got into the lunch area in the Woodruff Arts Center. The food was delicious and had come from The Corner Bakery. We all want to thank The High Museum of Art. It was very nice of them to let us have a free tour of the Art museum.

Students and teachers, please share some more of your favorite highlights of the trip.

JHH Gets Physical

Hh_7 Our Physical Education program was recently spotlighted in the February 3rd edition of The Rockdale Citizen.

Physical Education classes at J.H. House Elementary School have stepped into high gear.  Through a $10,000 youth fitness grant from General Mills, the school purchased 30 Polar Heart Rate monitors along with a Tri-FIT Evaluation System, which is an advanced computer integrated fitness evaluation system.  According to Stacy Roper, physical education teacher at J.H. House, the emphasis in P.E. has shifted from games with winners and losers to a focus on equipping students with the skills and knowledge that will encourage them to lead physically active lives.

Students, share some of your experiences using the heart rate monitors.  What have you learned about your heart through monitoring your rate during physical education class?  Is it hard to keep your heart rate in the target zone?
