In the morning when I came to blog I went to the current event site to find an interesting fact and it suddenly caught my eye.
The very poisonous cane toad is now one of Australia's most dangerous pests - so full of lethal chemicals it can kill a kangaroo.
They were brought over to Australia from Hawaii around 70 years ago to stop the spread of cane beetles. But now they're out of control and breeding so fast there are over 100 million of them. And they're spreading. Australian authorities are now so desperate to stop the toads spreading that they're offering a cash prize for someone to find the best way to round them up.
Hi Juan!
I am finding the bloggers' posts about animals really fun and interesting. I thought your post about the cane toad was an eye-opener. Thanks for bringing it to the world's attention on your blog. Personally, I think it's probably a mistake to introduce a new kind of animal or plant into a habitat where it didn't live before. You might want a new animal to eat pests (like the cane beetle), but it might suddenly start to multiply and ruin the whole ecosystem! In each ecosystem, the animals that naturally live in it have arrived at a very sensitive balance over many centuries. Introducing one new animal could easily throw the whole balance off. What do you think?
I'm really interested in what you bloggers have to say about environmental issues. These problems are going to be serious for a long time unless young people grow up to resolve them. It looks like you guys are thinking hard about these things. Way to go, Juan!
