Hubble has detected oxygen on another planet. The oxygen and carbon are bleeding off a gas gaint extrasolar planet. It is orbiting a star 150 light years from Earth! The planet is called Osiris after the Egyptian god that lost part of his body like HD209458b. I wish I could know more about the planet. Could anyone tell me more information? It completes its orbit around the star in less than 4 days. HD209458b belongs to a class called "Hot Jupiters." Its atmosphere is so hot that it boils hydrogen into space. The starlight passing through the envelope shows that it is being ripped off by the panet's evaporating hydrogen. The planet is only 4.3 million miles from it's sun like star. If you were chosen to go to a planet outside our solar system what would you take and why?
Wow! I'd never even heard of Osiris until I read your post! I was curious to know more about the planet though, so I did a little searching. I found this site from NASA that has some more facts about it: http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/newworlds/Osiris_leaks.html
Considering it's temperature is about 1,000 degrees celsius, I don't think I'll be spending a vacation there any time soon!
