Our   Family at the Park
It is a Saturday morning in a beautiful park in North Georgia. You can hear a variety of birds chirping. It sounds like a symphony. There is   a meadow of green grass that covers a hillside. It smells so fresh and clean.   All my grandkids are here for the family picnic. They are romping and rolling   in the grass. I hear peals of laughter that warm my heart. We all play games   by finding shapes in the rolling clouds high up in the sky. We look for   shapes in the clouds in the sky. John Michael sees a soldier, Jilaine a   princess, and Genesis thinks that is a real mouse high in the sky. It feels   good to have the warm, yellow sun shining down on our backs. The delicious   smell of the crunchy, fried chicken makes us ready to eat!. All the grandkids   want a leg!  We all agree that there is   not a better way to spend a Saturday morning!

Snapshots of Favorite Places

It's fun to take snapshots of favorite places. Did you know that you can take snapshots with writing? Your snapshots can evoke powerful images and make your writing really come alive. All you have to do is use your "senses" and write descriptive words about those "senses."

What did I see?

What did I hear

What did I taste or smell?

What did I feel or touch?

Brainstorm those questions that focus on the five senses. Jot descriptive phrases down for each one.
Then you have all your impressions right in front of you. You are ready to write a colorful description.

Here are questions to keep in mind as you answer the questions. It is OK to get others to help you with this - parents, friends, teachers, and others! Good writers collaborate!

• Were you specific about the place?
• Did you tell where? (just generally since we are blogging)
• Did you mention when? Was it daytime, nighttime, what year, what day, what hour? You don't have to answer all of these. Just keep the time in mind.
• Did you name some sounds, noises, actions that took place?
• Were you able to describe how things felt if you touched or felt things at your favorite place?
• How about smell or taste? Many times we associate favorite places with certain aromas or tasty foods.
• Did you use color in your descriptions?
• Did you use connecting words so your ideas flowed and made sense? Words like between, beside, near, upstairs, under. over, and any other similar words?

What I like about writing is we can write about anything we want. I find writing easy & hard, because sometimes it's hard to think of a writing topic but once you get it it's easy.

Writing about writing

What fun we had Friday writing about writing! I was astounded by your writing. I could tell you gave it a lot of thought. Miss Neville and I were whispering over in the corner of the lab about how impressed we were! Did you hear us?

I was disapponted that a few of you had not done the assignment Miss Neville gave you. You did not get to blog with us. I hope you will think about the importance of being responsible because we missed your being in the group. I am going to think positive thoughts that that will not happen again.

I want to complement Mimi on getting her assignment done as she was absent the day the assignment was made. That is being responsible. We'll add her picture when she gets a chance to draw it. Your clever illustrations added a lot of pizazz to your blogging posts. Friday was also a day full of establishing routines that will save us time so we have more time for blogging and answering comments. We just couldn't get to all the comments but we will try again! You were all so excited about the number of comments you had. We thank those readers who took the time to respond to our writing. It is so exciting to open up those comments. That is what my fifth graders loved the most about blogging - oh the anticipation! It was wonderful.

What I like about writing is that I get to share what’s happening and what I’m learning. 

I find writing easy because I know what, where, and who to write about.

I think of what I want to do in my life and use that as a topic. I like to choose my own topic because I already know what I want to write about.

I find writing hard because it my hand makes hurt. I enjoy you picking out my topics because you are creative. I also enjoy it better when you pick them because I like your ideas. I like writing because I can write about anything I want. I can’t wait to write again.

What I like about writing is using your mind and picking topics. Once you get started it’s really easy. When it’s nonfiction you just skip along and remember what you did. I like to pick my own topic to write about. I would tell 1^st graders don’t forget to put punctuation! The one thing I need help on is spelling.

I like picking my own topics and starters. I also like that we can be as creative as we want. What I don’t like is that it’s hard. It’s hard because a conversation is kind of long. It is also hard because we have to use good handwriting.

I like writing sometimes but sometimes I don’t. When I don’t like writing I normally, don’t have a topic and I just come up with a topic from out of nowhere. I normally don’t like writing. When I have a topic, I do like it. I find writing so easy sometimes but sometimes it is challenging. I would rather choose a topic myself because I feel confident and independent.
