Jimmy Carter Gets A Big Prize

Jimmy Carter was the U.S President in 1980. Since leaving the White House, he has traveled the world working for peace and fair treatment for all people. On October 11,2002 he was awarded the biggest prize of them all, the Nobel Peace Prize. In the year of 1982 Jimmy and his wife set up the Carter Center. The Center was built to promote human rights, democracy,and health care. He travels to the worlds most dire regions helping to make peace there. Jimmy Carter plans to give most of his $1 million prize to the Center so they can continue making peace.

My Hero : )

My hero is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a
white man forty years ago on December 1,1955. It was when colored people were treated like dogs. I admire her because she stood up for what she believed in. I admire her braveness when she sat at the front of the bus. When she didn't get up she was arrested right then and there, but she did not care. She still stood up for what she believed in. Later, she had a a meeting with MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. I respect her determination. I think that she had alot of courage. Some day I wish that I would have enough courage, braveness, and determination as Rosa Parks does.

Hi, this is Lucy. I'm going to tell you about Venus Williams:
Venus's Journey

Venus has a challenging attiude towards tennis. She is one of the best players in this sport. She is also a dynamic player in this sport. A dynamic player is being swift while doing something. In Venus's mind she thinks that no matter what color that you might be you should get out there play the sport and have fun while doing it.
Venus has proven that you don't have to be in a rich country club to learn to play tennis.
Venus's father, Richard Williams taugh both Venus and her sister Serena Williams on asphalt courts in Compton, Los Angeles where small green weeds grow in the cracks.
She holds the record for fastest server in the history by females: the speed 127.4mph. 100- mile-plus that can counter.
I think she is a great role-model. For one reason she is challenging and determined.

Session Synopsis

Students bounced in the room carrying full of excitement! Of course, they had just been in the halls watching a delightful Halloween parade conducted by the Pre-K and Kindergarten students and teachers. Yikes, the costumes were scary! What fun! Creativity abounds in this school.

Everyone had numerous illustrations of their idioms. Creativity is showing up here, also. I gathered them up and said we'd share a little later. I will spotlight them on this site from time to time. Pictures take up server space so I am trying to be selective in this area.

I wanted the students to have enough time to respond to the people who had commented on their posts. They love this part of the session. Having someone recognize you as a writer is a good feeling and quite a motivator. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who are taking the time to do this. It is very much appreciated.

Next, we followed my link on the site to students' views on the war. These views were written by Mr. Ford's class in Amsterdam. Lively discussion followed. Everyone was very eager to respond and give their thoughts and opinions. We hope to hear back from them.

Homework - work on your writing piece about heroes. Remember to give background about the person you select and give reasons for your selection. Use good descriptive words and write it so that we will want to "hang on to every word". (Can you illustrate that?)

We had time to share some of the idioms at the end of class. Doesn't time fly when you are having fun? See you next week. Feel free to post on this site and give your opinions about all that we are doing.
