In an effort to combat increasing obesity rates nationwide, the Georgia House introduced a controversial bill in February aimed at reducing childhood obesity. House Bill 497 (HB 497) calls for schools to take the leading role in this fight. Schools would be responsible for weighing all students twice a year. This information would be communicated to parents via report cards, along with the student’s body mass index (BMI).
Amidst a barrage of complaints and concerns Rep. Stephanie Benfield, who sponsored the bill, dropped the idea and has vowed to find other ways to help fight childhood obesity in our state.
What are you thoughts? Would mandatory weight and BMI measurements included on report cards help fight childhood obesity? What do you think are the positive and/or negative implications of this bill? What other ideas would you offer to Rep. Benfield to assist Georgia in the fight against childhood obesity?
I think your posts are GREAT! Personally, I don't believe the schools should weigh and measure BMI twice a year. Our role should be to educate our students in healthy habits for a lifetime of healthful living. That should include health eating as well as regular exercise. That's where our PE program comes in. You are doing so much in your class to help students understand the connection between their activity level and the impact it has on the body. Keep up the good work!!

I think this bill should be manditory.I think childhood obcity should be helped.I think if we passed this bill less kids would get diabetes.I think another thing we could do is have P.E everyday.Middle school kids and high school kids have it every day why can't we.

Ms. Roper,
Ever since I was in 2nd grade, people have been making fun of me because of my weight. I try to look skinny, and suck it in, but sometimes I just cant hide it. I play softball a lot, so why should I weigh as much as I do?
You see, my coach makes the team run something called suicides. A have a few "chubby" girls on my team, and it is really hard for us. I think that I need to get into shape. Do you think that sometime we could get together and talk about some things that I could do to help me get into better shape?
Sometimes people say "Oh, you are not fat", and I wish that I could see that in myself.
Thanks,
Shelby S.

I also think child obesity should stop. I think a person should get at least an hour of exersise each day.

I think it is great that the issue of childhood obesity is brought up. Gym is a great way to help get kids in shape, but is not the only way. Students are out of school for atleast two months during the summer and a couple weeks during the school year which allows the student to gain back the weight. Students should be educated on healthy eating habits. I also think that if your school has candy/pop machines, that they should only be filled with healthy foods/drinks. This would get the kids used to buying healthy foods/drinks, and making healthy choices.

Hello, This is Mary
I am 36 years old with 2 toddlers. My youngest just started day care last week- which still feels a little strange. I haven't had this much time to myself in years. First thing I want to do is lose the extra pounds I put on during the last pregnancy. One of the girls next door has suggested I join her walking group two days a week. After my first pregnancy I lost around 35 pounds using the Herbalife products, but when I called the man that sold them to me three years ago he told me this week he doesn't sell them anymore. He told me to look on the internet. It's disappointing because he was really nice and he called me regularly to make sure I was using their products correctly. It was nice to have someone checking in with me every week to see how I was and it kept me motivated.
I searched on the internet for someone that sells Herbalife in New Jersey. I found many websites but I don't want
just to buy the products, I want to find someone trustworthy that sells the products so I can also meet them and get started again.
Could anybody here recommend someone in New Brunswick?
Thanks, Mary
