Allen Lichtenstein of Nevada is strongly against schools dress codes. I agree with him too.
I quote:
NO! The Supreme Court has said that students do not leave their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse door. Yet some school's dress codes restrict student's freedom of expression. Supporters claim that uniforms and dress codes improve discipline and increase student achievement. But there is little evidence to support this. Codes stifle individuality. While no one supports allowing clothing that is dangerous, disruptive or too revealing, many codes go too far. America has always prided itself on the individuals right to self-expression. That respect should extend to student clothing.
Shelby, I used to think uniforms were a bad idea but now I work at an international school and almost everyone, including the students, likes them. It sounds weird, but on free dress days when kids can wear whatever they want, somehow the kids look less individual. I know that makes no logical sense, but we have all noticed it. It seems that all the different clothes makes the individuals harder to see. The students tell me they like uniforms because our are comfortable and practical, everyone has the same so no one is put down for what they are wearing, they don't have to think about what to wear in the morning, and their family has more money to spend on fun clothes because they don't have to buy so many school clothes.
