Elementary Students Reflections on Weblogs

1.  What's your favorite thing about weblogs?

My favorite thing about weblogs is being able to demonstrate my writing and being able to express my personal opinion.

2. What have you learned?

I've learned to use techniques to help improve my writing skills.

3. Do you feel more comfortable about any of  your skills?

Yes. I now understand  how to use my skills in journalism, exclaimers, coming up thought provoking questions, and in organizing factual writings.

4. If an outsider visited your site, what would you hope he or she would think about it?

I would hope they would think of children as being capable of more than they had first anticipated.

5. In what ways have you become a better writer?

I've become a better writer in several ways. My vocabulary has increased, I've learned to organize my thoughts and place them in sequential order, and most of all I learned ways to grab other people's attention.

6.  How does having a weblog affect how you learn? How does it affect how you write?

When I post my newly created writing, I then have something to look at and see how I can improve on the next post. I like to look back on my papers and a weblogs allows you to do so.  This isn't as easy as when you have written your stories on paper.

7. What did you think of the Georgia-NJ connection?

I loved it! I learned so much from my penpals. They gave me tips and intellegent answers to all my questions.

8. Do you have any words of wisdom for future student webloggers?

Yes, never quit when you feel you would like to give up.

9. Discuss your feelings about weblogs about weblogs now.

I believe it is an educational privilage that will surely boost one's writing skills and allow them to think outside the box.

10. Which response that you got from someone who made a comment about what you wrote did you like the best? Why?

The best response I have gotten from someone would have to be Amanda. She gave me an example and helped me overcome my fear of displaying my writing in public by giving me personal background.

How Well Do You Know Your Teacher?

Today, Mrs Davis allowed the Newsquest group to bring a friend to perform a simulated interview. We were assigned to create thought provoking questions for our homeroom teacher. My partner's name is Jordan. We plan to include a disclaimer with our interview.

Dane and Jordan's Interview with Mrs Henning

Dane and Jordan: If you were in General Tommy Frank's shoes right now what wuold you do?"

Ms. Henning: I would send out more troops and fight for my country.

Dane and Jordan: In all the years you've been teaching have your students ever been more alert about the news?

Ms. Henning: No, the war in Iraq has really gotten my students alert.

Dane and Jordan: If you could do something to change the world in this time of war what would it be?

Ms. Henning: I would let the children write to the soldiers.

Dane and Jordan: Are you satisfied with your yearly salary?

Ms Henning: Yes, it provides us with enough money for food and for a home.

Dane and Jordan: Do you enjoy your teaching career? What do you like and dislike about it?

Ms. Henning: I really enjoy teaching and I like having my mother right across the hall.

Dane and Jordan: If you were principal of the school for one day what would you change?

Ms.Henning: I would allow more time for the children to have recess.

Dane and Jordan: What inspired you to become a teacher? Why did you choose J.H.House?

Ms Henning: I found that I enjoyed working with children and I heard that J.H.House was a very nice school.

Dane and Jordan: What is the saddest thing you have ever encountered during a school year?

Ms.Henning: I believe seeing kids fail is  very sad.

Dane and Jordan: What in your opinion was the most exciting event of the school year?

Ms. Henning: Probably the bowling party at the end of the year.

Dane and Jordan: Do you believe children can change the world? How?

Ms. Henning: I believe they could change the world by comforting our soldiers, becoming imformed citizens, and doing what they do best.

Unfortunatly,  Jordan got sick in the middle of this class so my friend Zakkiyya took his place.

The contents of this interview published by Dane and Jordan are solely the responsibility of the weblog authors for the posting on simulated interviews with our teachers. Statements made and opinions expressed in these interviews are based on what we believe would be the responses of our teachers. This activity was developed to help us develop good questions for interviews and then write the interview in a form that would be clear, concise, and interesting for our teacher and others to read. We, of course, are trusting that our teacher will enjoy this activity as much as we have. We really hope our teacher will agree that our answers could be her answers and will be amazed at how well we have come to know her! We would like to dedicate this post to Ms. Henning and say thank you for a wonderful year.

War

Hi, we're working on creating cinquains in the news. A cinquain is a type of poem that has a certain amount of syllables in each line. Here is my poem.

                             War

                             What an event

                             No word could describe it

                             The worst solution there is

                              Soldiers leave there loved  ones

War Update

As the war continues more and more troops flow into Kuwait. So far only about twenty British troops and about fourty U.S are dead.

Recently, U.S forces smashed through elite Iraqi divions within twenty miles of Baghdad on Wednsday.Marines also seized a  vital bridge over the Tigris River.

In the meantime President Bush apparently has everything under control. General Franks says the same.
