Wow boys and girls, we had another wonderful Field Day! I saw some real nail bitters in the relays. It was almost impossible to determine which class won! You gave it your all in every event.
Everyone did great with the new events. Those "Gators" didn't seem to give you any trouble. The "Beach Bum Run" turn out much better than I anticipated. It looks like you are all ready for summer to begin!
I can't believe we are still having trouble getting those pizzas delivered without dropping them! Then again, most pizza places don't deliver 15 at a time. The best news of all is that I saw some of the best examples of TEAMWORK during the "Pizza Relay".
Everyone seemed to enjoy getting wet...again this year. You worked so hard during the other events that you really needed to cool off with the "Sponge Relay", "Melt Down" and "The Water Balloon Toss".
And now I have to brag about my helpers, who went beyond the call of duty to help the younger boys and girls enjoy their Field Day as well. Thank you for your hard work!
Now that it is over...what was your favorite part of Field Day this year?
The pizza boxes are waiting to be delivered and the gators are ready to run. You've had a chance to practice all of the events. Well, except for a few surprise events. After all, they would not be 'surprises' if you practiced them!
As you step out onto the playing field in the next few days, remember this: It's great to win, but it's more important to have fun!

Let the fun and games of Field Day begin!
The JHH Relay for Life team had an enjoyable time at the event this year. We got all dressed up for a Luau with our grass skirts (yuck!) and colorful leis.
The most memorable and inspirational part of the evening occurred during the "Survivor Lap". This was a very special lap around the track for people of all ages that have had cancer and beat it. Those amazing folks had some great big smiles on their faces as they marched in unison to the thunderous applause of the crowd. I think they were so happy not just because they took on cancer and won, but they realized that with the help of events like "Relay For Life" that there would one day be a cure for cancer.
Speaking of all that walking...I 'logged' 31,501 steps on my pedometer. That's over 11 miles! Next year in P.E. we will be using pedometers and attempting to 'log' enough miles to walk around the United States! I can't wait to use the new equipment with everyone, but it will have to wait until after FIELD DAY!!
It sounds like just about everyone enjoys getting soaked at Field Day! I don't blame you since it is usually hot outside and you've been running around all day. What could possibly be more fun than a friendly game of "Leaky Pipe", the challenge of the "Water Balloon Toss", or having it rain all over you in the "Sponge Relay"?
There is one thing that can take the fun out of even those games and that 'thing' is a bad sport. At JHH we all want to work extremely hard to be good sports. The best way to do that is by following the most important rule for being a good sport: Always treat your classmates, teammates, opponents, teachers and helpers the way you would like to be treated! Hum...that sounds a lot like the Golden Rule to me!
Since we are talking about being a good sport, let me share a website with you that talks about "How to be a good sport" (be certain you click on the "next page" icon or you will miss the best advice). KidsHealth offers some great tips for showing that you are a good sport.
"Have fun. Don't forget that's what playing a sport is really all about!"
I think that is the best of all because Field Day should really be about having fun!
Now it is your turn. Think of how you can show everyone that you are being a good sport. Or if you prefer, share a time when you observed someone being a good sport. Now get your good sport brain working so you can be mentally prepared for Field Day.
My favorite time of the year is just around the corner – Field Day! I can hardly wait for all the fun to begin. It’s like I’ve got ants in my pants. I am so excited!
Since we are getting ready for Field Day in class, I thought it would be a fantastic idea to turn my attention to various themes and ideas concerning this awesome event. In future posts I will discuss the most important thing to remember at Field Day and sportsmanship. Allow me to recommend Mrs. Hooper’s blog on sportsmanship if you want to read ahead. She has provided us with a detailed definition, a great website to visit and her concern (which I share) about the increase of “inappropriate behavior”.
Before we get into more serious topics, let’s have a little fun. Share your favorite Field Day memories or games. Was it the time your class won the Pizza Delivery Relay or the Sponge Relay when you got soaked? Maybe your favorite memory is something totally different. It doesn’t matter. Just share!
“Hat Day” is a creative fundraising idea that House has employed to raise money for a variety of non-profit organizations, including the United Way and Relay For Life. The concept behind “Hat Day” is that for 50 cents (the same amount of money you need to purchase an ice cream), you will be permitted to wear your very own hat during the day at school. This is great because wearing a hat in school is not something you can do under normal circumstances!
On Friday, April 1st the students and faculty at House will have the opportunity to celebrate a “Hat Day” to support our team of teachers and assist them in raising money for the Relay For Life,
Will I be wearing a hat on April 1st? You better believe I will. Not only will I be wearing my favorite hat, but on May 6th I will be walking in memory of my cousin Bradley.
Now it is your turn to do your part. Are you willing to spare 50 cents to help in the fight against cancer? You do not have to know someone who has or had cancer to help out. Let’s all join together and help the American Cancer Society find a cure for this terrible disease.
One thing that stood out to me in your comments was the “new equipment”. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that you are enjoying it! I was also impressed by your comments concerning obesity. Many of you believe something should be done to stop it and I could not agree with you more. Did you realize that YOU are the most powerful player in the fight against obesity?
The prevalence of obesity in our country can be attributed to a combination of lack of exercise and poor diet (or eating habits). And this is the part where you need to take control of your health. Be active! Get up and move around. Instead of playing games on the computer or watching TV when you go home after school, get up and do something.
Not certain where to start? Take this quick activity quiz for some ideas that ‘fit’ your personality. There are an unlimited number of ways in which you can be active. You don’t need a gym full of “new equipment” (but it certainly doesn’t hurt!).
There are tons of things that I enjoy doing to be active. Like using the elliptical at the gym, riding my bike, playing golf and even taking my dog for a walk. Actually, my dog takes me for a walk! Either way, it is good for both of us.

In an effort to combat increasing obesity rates nationwide, the Georgia House introduced a controversial bill in February aimed at reducing childhood obesity. House Bill 497 (HB 497) calls for schools to take the leading role in this fight. Schools would be responsible for weighing all students twice a year. This information would be communicated to parents via report cards, along with the student’s body mass index (BMI).
Amidst a barrage of complaints and concerns Rep. Stephanie Benfield, who sponsored the bill, dropped the idea and has vowed to find other ways to help fight childhood obesity in our state.

It is time to push the mute button on that sports commentator in my head. He is the well dressed gentleman with a British accent that convinces you into hitting your driver off the 1st tee.
“Fore! Heads up on the right side this one is coming at you!”
He’s also the former All-Star who can make you think twice before swinging at the pitch.
“Strike three! You’re out!”
Perhaps that is a stretch of the imagination. There will be no high paid sports analyst reading my blog, will there? Yikes…it is even worse than I expected! Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Meeler, the Blooming Bloggers, students and teachers of House, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
I am embarking on this cyberspace adventure because to the JHH Blooming Bloggers. This group of remarkable students let me have a sneak peek at blogs detailing their favorite sports. My love of sports and their fascinating blogs were a perfect match. Making comments on their posts resulted in the most exciting part of my blogging experience ~ the students responding to my comments. Now I am hooked!
My goal is to get this blog in shape. Along the way I will address issues concerning health, fitness and P.E. happenings. Let's dive in …
